Interview Techniques

Police Recruit Selection

Since the introduction of the National Recruitment Model a number of police forces across England and Wales have introduced additional selection components. This means, in addition to the NRM Stage 1 application form and Stage 2 assessment centre, they hold selection interview panels (sometimes called ‘filter’ interviews or selection ‘boards’). These panels may be held after you have passed the stage 1 application or after you have passed the stage 2 assessment. In each case, the police force is using the interview to decide whether you fit their local person specification for the role of constable. Even though you have passed the assessment centre it does not guarantee you a job; you will have to pass the selection panel to be offered a post.

To make sure you pass the filter interview ISP can provide you with a two stage training package to prepare you for the interview panel. After payment:

  • You will receive materials that will enable you to begin your preparation, and
  • You will have a half day coaching session on interview technique that will develop your knowledge and skills into a performance that will ensure you are successful at the selection panel

The package is extremely flexible and can be tailored to meet your individual needs.

The cost is £65

Serving Police Officers Selection

If you are a serving police officer and reading this it is fairly certain you must be seeking to get promoted, move into a specialist role, seeking acceptance on the High Potential Development Scheme or trying to understand why you have not been successful at a previous police selection panel.

Police forces generally use a three stage process for most selections which incorporate a competency based application, assessment centre exercises and a panel interview. Often the first two stages are well within the capabilities of most candidates but is the panel interview or ‘board’ that presents the most challenges. How often have you heard comments like, ‘What was that all about?’; ‘I couldn’t work out where it was all going’; ‘How can they pass that person with three years service when I have got twenty years in?’

ISP can help unravel the mystery of the interview panel and the other components of selection processes.

If you are contemplating applying for selection or about to undertake the process we recommend that you:

1. Obtain a copy of the ISP paperback book ‘Police Selection Boards’.

This work book is designed to:

  • Demystify the police selection panel process and enable applicants to understand what is being looked for and why it is done that way
  • Provide candidates with essential knowledge and understanding of subjects that are fundamental to the board process
  • Provide candidates with a self-assessment tool that helps them discover areas of strength and areas for development
  • Assist candidates to build development plans that are dynamic, relevant to their work environments and supported by their immediate managers

In essence, this is the foundation for your personal development programme.

2. Complete the on-line psychometric tests to help you understand your team and leadership styles.

Then contact us to discuss your particular circumstances. We will then be able to explore how we can help you and recommend a development programme to suit your needs.

We look forward to hearing from you.
